What makes a good commercial singer?

Many people believe they are qualified to be a performer in commercial music because friends, family, and church members have told them how talented they are. Though well-meaning, these people are probably not in a position to accurately assess the commercial viability of a singer or songwriter. It would be like you telling your neighbor he should go on the PGA tour because he won a local charity golf tournament.

No matter how “well” you sing it still may not qualify you for success in commercial Christian music. So, how can you know if you are a good commercial singer? In most cases, there must be something about your voice that catches people’s ear right away, a uniqueness, or distinct quality that “jumps off the radio.” Most people can recognize Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith the moment they hear them sing. If you sound like many other male or female vocalists across the country, then you probably don’t have what it takes to be successful in commercial music.

Tips:

  • Don’t assume you are a good commercial singer. Find “unbiased” people who will tell you honestly if you have any real commercial talent.
  • Remember that “unique” and “distinct” are important qualities in commercial music. If you sound like everybody else, your chances for commercial success are limited.
  • Playing an instrument can enhance your commercial appeal.
  • Don’t assume your original songs are good enough to sing during your concerts. Find unbiased people to give you feedback.
